Barrie founded, 1833
The first home is built in 1890
Stephen Pratt immigrated from England in 1871. He built two houses in the Barrie/Cundles area in the 1890’s. Stephen’s homes were lit with kerosene/naphtha gas and heated with coal and a wood stove.
1920’s first houses to have electric outlets.
William Pratt built about 20 houses in Barrie from the 1920’s into the 1950’s. William’s houses were the first houses to have electric outlets and wall insulation; made of wood chips and shavings.
Added the half space in the 1940’s
Murray Pratt’s houses incorporated a bedroom in the attic, thereby adding a half floor of living space. He also built one of Barrie’s few frameless houses from blocks and concrete. Murray’s houses in the 1940’s sold for $4,200 to $4,700.
1950 to 1974, 200 houses built in Barrie
Gord Pratt built about 200 houses in Barrie from 1950 to 1974. His first houses were built using a horse and scraper to excavate the basement.

Garage incorporated, 1975
Bill and Don built 12 houses together in 1975. They were the first Pratt builders to incorporate attached garages into standard building plans. This created a whole new look in Barrie home building.
Pratt Homes was born
Don Pratt built several hundred houses in Barrie from 1976 to 2004. Don was involved in the R2000 home concept launch in Barrie. Through this, he made several innovations in building efficiency and energy saving. Also, he was the first family builder to brand the Pratt Homes name and create the Pratt Homes logo.

Continuing the success
Karen and Heljar have built several hundred houses in Barrie starting from 2005. They are pushing forward into the new area of Energy Star, energy efficient housing.
